In my recent trip to India, I have noticed that "Hutch" one of the service providers has facilitated convenient cell phone battery charge stations at the airports and major hotels free of charge. I thought it is a neat idea and a simple solution for cell phone battery charging.

Wouldn't it be nice if we can have a small solar cell attached to the cell phone and keep the batteries charged continuously? How much power can we generate with a small solar cell? How long does it take to charge the cell phone battery? Solar power is the solution for long battery life in cell phones?

Energy harvesting term has a nice ring to it, doesn't it? If we can harvest energy from the environment to replenish the batteries, then we don't need to carry extra batteries or require frequent recharging and solve the battery life problems with cell phones.
How do we harvest energy from the environment? How much energy can be extract by these methods? Do they offer a solution to extend the battery life in cell phones?
